Obstetrician–Gynaecologist / Gynaecologist: What Is the Difference?

Obstetrician–Gynaecologist / Gynaecologist: What Is the Difference?

  • Obstetrics: This field covers the preconception period, pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
  • Gynaecology: This field covers conditions involving the female reproductive organs, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. As the female reproductive organs are also closely associated with the bowel, bladder and urinary system, gynaecologists also treat conditions involving these areas.

In Türkiye, following graduation from medical school, physicians take the Medical Specialisation Examination and begin specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. During this training programme, they receive education covering every stage of pregnancy, including conception, antenatal follow-up, high-risk pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Specialist training also includes infertility, family planning, gynaecology, gynaecological oncology and ultrasonography. After completing a demanding five-year training programme and passing the theoretical and practical specialist examinations, trainees receive the title of Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In Türkiye, obstetricians and gynaecologists who wish to pursue further specialisation after completing their specialist training may undertake subspecialty training in perinatology, which focuses on high-risk pregnancies, or gynaecological oncology.

Depending on their areas of interest, specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology may focus more extensively on either obstetrics or gynaecology.
